Hey Sports Fans,
This time, I mean that literally!
I'm currently in Palm Springs, the last time here I spent the entire time with food poisoning, stuck in my Hotel.
I did get a neeedle in my ass and the greatest piece of medical advice in human history (actually, the second after Dean Jackson sent me this video)
A story for another time...
This trip, I'm a picture of good health and have filmed a series of three bonkers use cases for AI.
Not only are they cool, each will hopefully give you an idea of why I'm anticipating the 20th anniversary of the Challenge so much.
For our first piece of awesome, let’s rewind a couple of weeks to me at home in Melbourne, Australia, watching Game 1 of the World Series.
I've always wondered what all those baseball stats mean?
Stats are such a big part of Baseball and I was going to start Googling when I had an idea...
I snapped a quick photo of the stats and thought, “What if I ask ChatGPT to explain all this?”
Holy moly, it did not disappoint. It broke down everything—things I’d been curious about but never bothered to Google.
Slugging percentage? Boom, explained.
Why Aaron Judge is considered a power hitter? Check. (Though I’ll admit, the “feared power hitter” thing didn’t quite apply during the Series. Sorry, Yankees fans.)
Then, for fun, I asked ChatGPT how Aaron Judge stacks up against the one and only Shohei Ohtani. ChatGPT came through with some solid insights, though it slipped up on which team Ohtani was playing for.
This gets at an important point.
A lot of folks moan, “Oh, but AI gets things wrong!” Yes, it does.
However, for a quick explanation—especially for something like sports stats where we just need the gist—it’s fantastic.
Sure, if we’re managing a nuclear plant, hallucinations are a no-go. For everyday questions, I’ll take the 90% accurate answer (and better than I could) any day.
I got instant, useful answers to help me follow the game without diving into forums or stats websites.
This is exactly the type of “cool use” of AI I’ll be exploring in the AI 30-Day Challenge.
Imagine creating tools for your market that give actionable answers without bogging people down in details. These are the kinds of ideas we’ll bring to life in the challenge.
It's even cooler when you see it in person. I shot a video to show you.
Using ChatGPT to explain the stats on the TV in real time
Catch you next time,
